PSP Homebrew - Easy Spoof v1 Beta: spoof your own firmware
October 31, 2008
Why would you want to spoof your own firmware version? Because you can, thanks to Mr_Shizzy's homebrew app, Easy Spoof v1 Beta. This is a simple tool that, as the name clearly suggests, allows you to spoof your firmware version. Now, don't be confused with this one: it does NOT actually change your firmware, just the firmware version display in the XMB, under the "System Settings/ System Information", alright? It's a spoof, remember.
Anyhow, this is just Beta v1 so the dev says he'll probably be updating more in the future to accommodate more than eight characters for use in the firmware spoofs. You can join the discussion by visiting our forums linked below, or by leaving your comments here in our section.

PSP Homebrew - Guitarway to Heaven Riffs
October 31, 2008
PSP homebrew dev benjami posted another homebrew from the RRS dev team. According to him, the Guitarway to Heaven Riffs application is the first that they've made, built on the PSPRevolution Engine.
What this application does is to teach you how to play various riffs on guitar, so obviously, this should be a great tool for those who wants to learn how to rock it out. The program displays the tab, as well as plays the song, so you can play along to it and see if you're hitting the right notes.
This release, however, is just a demo, but we're definitely gonna be hearing more from these guys later. For now, though, it's got 5 riffs for you to try out:
- ZZ Top - La Grange
- AC/DC - Back in Black
- Van Halen - Aint talking about love
- Joe Satriani - The Extremist
- Metallica - Seek and Destroy

Hold v3.1: reduced CPU usage
October 31, 2008
Homebrew developer Torch gave us a quick heads up on his popular Hold program, which is now on version 3.1. Hold is a plugin that'll help your unit save on some battery power. This version has several new features and fixes. Here's the changelog from Torch:
Changelog v3.1
- Reduced CPU usage by delaying longer in main loop. Since v3.0 the main loop doesn't do much so it needn't run as fast as before. This should alleviate problems with the battery icon.
- Now its not possible to accidentally press 'other' buttons in hold mode while holding Select button. Ex: If you are holding Select VolUp to increase volume, and you accidentally press X, the X button will not have effect.
- Completely overhauled the plugin to work using only the SysCon functions based on Booster's example.
- The prevention of accidental suspend was changed to Booster's method as that is more efficient.
- In Display Off mode, pressing the Screen button to return to normal no longer causes the firmware's internal brightness variable to become one step higher and the original screen brightness.
- Added the ability to use some of the buttons while in hold mode, by holding the Select button first.
Thanks to Torch for the tip!

Japan hardware sales from the 20th to the 26th of October- PSP dominates, PSP sinks to new low
October 31, 2008
Although all the platforms experienced a drop in sales from the week before last, the PSP continues to show strength over the others. Last week, it sold more units Japan than the PS3, DS, Wii, and Xbox 360 combined yet again. On the other hand, the PS3's figures dropped to a new low.
It seems that the sleek handheld from Sony is a big hit in Japan. As for the PS3, maybe we can expect sales to pick up in the coming weeks, owing to its strong lineup during the holidays. We can check back on the numbers next week once Media Create releases its weekly hardware sales chart.

EA clarifies forums ban, says forums and games access are separate
October 31, 2008
It was merely a misunderstanding, says Electronic Arts (EA), regarding the EA forum moderator's threat that gamers could get banned from playing EA games for improper forum behavior. They corrected that the forum and the access to games are different so it doesn't necessarily mean if you're banned from the forums then you're banned from the games.
So to those who are turning red from anger, cool down guys and dunk your heads in a bucket of ice cold water. EA further explained:
Players can be banned if they breach the Terms of Service or Code of Conduct in a forum, game or service. Each forum, game and service is managed independently by customer support representatives responsible for that specific forum, game or service.
Just like Spore's issue earlier this year, users were threatened to be banned from the game if they discussed controversial DRM's title news on its official forums. So now it is not all that bad because we learned something and that is to work on communication skills to avoid misunderstandings.

David Braben thinks buying pre-owned games hurt the industry
October 31, 2008
I never thought selling old games can be a hazard to the gaming industry. Well for Frontier founder and creator of Elite, David Braben, HMV's act of selling pre-owned games is detrimental to the gaming industry. The decision of HMV to do this is 'shocking' for him and he also thinks the company take action as soon as possible before further damages happen.
He explains, "The shops are not giving us a way of distinguishing between pre-owned and new. So the shops are essentially defrauding the industry. "
His firsthand experience of receiving an old copy for the same price of a new unit must have left a sour taste in his mouth, as we're sure a lot of you guys out there can empathize with. He thinks this is very disgraceful because it really destroys the shelf-life of their games.
We've got a lot of retailers eating our lunch and refusing to sell full-priced games. I've been in a shop where I've tried to buy a copy of a relatively recent game, and I've taken an empty box off the shelf and they've given me a pre-owned copy. That, I think, is disgraceful...Not holding stock of new games, substituting them with pre-owned games at the same or much the same price... That is really destroying the shelf-life of our games.
So what's the solution to this problem? The game industry should look into having a similar model as that used for DVDs and video sales, which are rental copies.
They brought out rental copies, and copies not for resale or rental. That distinction is really important in the video market, and all of the chains honour it because they know it's more than life's worth not to.
Well, we've all got our take on this matter. But what about you guys? Do share your thoughts at our comments section below.

PSP homebrew - MoCap Reality v1.1.159
October 31, 2008
Mr305 has released a cool homebrew app that lets you draw stuff just by wiggling your PSP around a bit. No, seriously. Think Etch A Sketch without the knobs.
The app's called MoCap Reality. It works in conjunction with the NeoFlash motion kit and, as Mr305 put it, "shows Real Time 2d representation of motion." Check out the screenshots above for an idea of what you can do with it.
MoCap Reality is currently at v1.1.159. This release doesn't have a screenshot feature, so if you want to share your artistic output (you can do that on the release thread linked on the Visit link below) you'll need a separate screenshot plugin.
