Video: The PSP Go unboxed

August 31, 2009

Those GamesRadar folks sure are lucky. We already saw them unbox a PS3 Slim, and now they've laid their hands on another piece of Sony hardware: the PSP Go. Watch them get play around with it a bit in the vid below. I'll say one thing, though: the difference in screen size doesn't seem that big after all. The price, however, is another story.

Sony will be rolling out the PSP Go in North America and Europe on October 1. In a bizarre twist, Japan will only get it a month later on November 1.

Video: Phantasy Star Portable 2 trailer

August 31, 2009

Now that Phantasy Star Portable 2 has been confirmed, Sega has started releasing some assets showing off their new PSP title. The game's official Japanese website was recently updated with a nice little trailer.

It's all in Japanese (except for Hideaki Kobayashi's "Living Universe", the song playing in the background), but you don't really need to understand the language to enjoy the vid.

Phantasy Star Portable 2 will be released in Japan on December 3, 2009.

PSP Homebrew: Team MX CFW 5.55 Beta released

August 31, 2009

Thanks to tipster Kindjal, we were made aware that Team MX has released their Beta 5.55 CFW. And they sure do have quite a list of instructions for your perusal, so why don't you get going.

Instructions and application within the. Rar:

PSP Homebrew - Image 1Due to the large number of mails received from you and the little time we have available to answer only say:

  1. Not see System Information prayer "5.55CF TMX-1" as only a beta, it will be seen in the final version.
  2. You can download any of the 3 links, that was just in case one failed.
  3. Before publishing the beta, it was sent to several PSP users with positive results in 65 of the time.
  4. It is advisable to just install on a CF M33.
  5. They can only return to the previous version if you made the backup of flash0 recommended in the readme.
  6. Do not ask questions like "what a PSP can use such plate as we ???", we only tested on a PSP 1000 and the other users who tested the beta before anyone else obtained positive and negative results regardless of the model plate or PSP.
  7. It is noteworthy that this is our first work for the PSP and the errors tend to spend so please do not judge a bad way bugs that come out of this beta.
  8. The beta was released for yourselves what they liked and did not wait for us to have something better.
  9. All you have to do is install the files in the flash0 and try any game that requires 5.55 and comment in the mail that had problems after that, remember that doing this will be part of Team MX and are also believed to contribute their grain of sand.
  10. We will rely on the information they send to finish the CF.
  11. MX Support Team to get the new PSP and continue to develop the firmware 5.55 by clicking on the AdSense blog.

Rumor: PSP-4000 is in the works, Sony bringing back UMD

August 31, 2009

It's possible that we missed this one because we got all worked up about the other tidbit we got from N4G user Super_Secret. Nonetheless, this is just as juicy as any, so we'll still bring it out here though it's quite a couple of days old.

According to PS3Center, Super_Secret also gave out a "reveal" regarding Sony's handhelds. He said that the PSP-3000 will indeed be phased out (what a short life span it'll have, so it turns out),but not by the PSP Go. Instead, there's a spankin' brand new PSP-4000 reportedly in development.

PSP Giant - Image 1
But he was so young...

Get this: they're putting back the UMD drive into it. As it is, that is definitely juicy. No other "details" or speculations have come up regarding this, but for now, we leave this short music video for Sony to express what we think about this back and forth decision-making on dropping the UMD.

Happy new week everyone!

Thanks to cmbeke for the heads up!

PS3 drops to dead last in Japan’s hardware sales charts

August 31, 2009

Hardware - Image 1

Handhelds are dominating the hardware sales charts in Japan right now, but the story over there is still the PS3 -- specifically the fact that it has dropped to dead last in the Media Create sales rankings.

The PS3 moved only 2,052 units for the week ended August 23. That's more than a thousand units less than the older PS2. It's quite possible that the lull in sales is because people are waiting for the PS3 Slim to drop. It would be interesting to see the number for that week. Also, contrary to the new pricing scheme for older PS3s in other countries, Sony Japan has chosen to not give the bulkier models a price drop.

At the top of the charts is the DSi. Yep, it's still going strong, selling more than half of the second placer PSP. Rounding out the top four are the Wii and Xbox 360 in third and fourth place, respectively. Here are the charts:

  • DSi: 59,578
  • PSP: 27,187
  • Wii: 26,972
  • Xbox 360: 8,979
  • DS Lite: 5,735
  • PS2: 3,295
  • PS3: 2,052

QuickJump QuickPeek 87: Face-off now on: you got those price cuts you wanted, now get those numbers up

August 30, 2009

QuickJump QuickPeek - Image 1

Exciting past couple of weeks, eh? The price cuts mad rush continued on this week with Microsoft joining in on the bandwagon. Meanwhile, Nintendo's sitting prettily and quietly, choosing the status quo, because, hey, they're on top in the status quo. Wouldn't want to change a thing about that now, would you?

It's also one event after the another, from E3 to GamesCom to upcoming PAX and TGS... if this does not revive interest in the industry, I don't know what will. This latter half of the calendar year is just bursting at the seams, and we've got a portion of all that action here in this nice little bundle for you stamped as QuickJump QuickPeek 87.

Read on.

PSP Weekend Warrior - Image 1Again, another good week for the QJ PSP blog. Quite a few big game news from the East to the West, including big guns Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep and Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. It wasn't all fun and games, though, as we also saw a cautionary tale for those who don't listen to their mothers and get into cars with strangers. PSA time, folks! Here's this week's edition of the PSP Weekend Warrior.

Quite a few theories sprung up during the latter half of the week when it was announced that Dark AleX's forums were shutting down. Did it mean that the homebrew legend was leaving the scene? Did Sony shell out the cash to shut him up? Are we going to see a new version of the retire-and-reemerge trick? Yeah, theories. While we wait for word from the "Dark" one himself, let's take a look at the week in homebrew.

PS3 Weekend Warrior - Image 1Fallout from GamesCom's big PS3 announcements continued to rain down on the PS3 blog this week. The PS3 Slim was still high in the jump counts, thanks to Sony putting its whole weight behind getting the word out to the masses with rebranding, ad campaigns, the works. It seems to be working too, as the Slim has reportedly sold out in some retailers even before the console's official launch. Yep, I bet Sony guys are flying pretty damn high right now. All that and more in the PS3 Weekend Warrior.

Xbox 360 Weekend Warrior - Image 1The biggest thing that you missed this week on the Xbox 360 blog is the back and forth dance towards the Xbox 360 Elite price cut. The good thing is that all's well that ends well. We did get the official announcement of the Elite price cut, but unfortunately, we did have to say goodbye to the Pro model. Oh well. We can't have everything, I guess. Read on for more news and updates on your much-awaited games.

WiiDS Weekend Warrior - Image 1With Sony and Microsoft now busy making their marketing push for the holidays, you gotta wonder what Nintendo is planning to do about it, especially considering that we haven't heard from any of the Nintendo execs for a while now. Are they gonna slim the Wii down too and call it the Wee Wii? Good grief I sure hope not. For the news that did come out over the week, you can catch it all on this edition of the Nintendo Weekend Warrior.

iPhone Weekend Warrior - Image 1This week's news revolves around things to come for the iPhone, and the iPod Touch. Also coming soon is a new iPod, so you should definitely check this one out. Read on for the complete run-down.

Industry News:

GamesCom was definitely a success. Don't believe us? Just check out that number of visitors throughout the week-long event. If you missed out on GamesCom, then worry not cos there's another chance you might want to grab, and it's TGS 2009 (PAX 2009 would be more practical given that it's just in Washington, though). It's happening in ... erm.. Tokyo this year, and Capcom, for one, has already confirmed their attendance, promising to bring "several" new titles with them.

For our WTF segment this week, we've got Ozzy Osbourne elucidating on his favorite video games. Now if only he could finish his damned sentence, we'd know what it is.

Even more WTF than bat-eating Ozzy's adorable mumbling is the story of this idiot guy, who tried to leech off the free Wi-Fi in the library so he could play some Xbox 360. He did. And got kicked out in the process as well. His picture now rests on the library's Hall of Shame.

Model says Beaterator is also on iPhone, Timbaland PSP Go featurette video

August 30, 2009

Beaterator - Image 1

Of all the places to find potential gaming news, it had to be on a model's blog (via Kotaku). International model Jacquetta Wheeler posted in her Vogue blog account (yes, models get to blog in Vogue, us mere mortals in myspace) that she saw Beaterator in actual play ... in an iPhone.

Now, this game, produced with Timbaland, has been announced for the PSP, but not the iPhone. Well, according to the model's blog, it was on the iPhone. Here's how she saw the game:

I stayed the last two nights with my dear friend Anouchka, her hubby Sam and their two adorable kids. It was heaven waking up every morning to their gorgeous little faces in my bedroom saying good morning Auntie Jac. Sam, who works at Rockstar Games, introduced me to Beaterator, a game that's about to come out, produced by Rockstar Games together with Timbaland. It is genius. I don't have an i-phone yet but think I'm going to have to buy one now as this game is so much fun and you can play it on your i-phone wherever you are. You are basically a DJ and the game enables you to create your own mixes. Hook it up to some speakers and you've got a party going on. You don't have to know anything about mixing, no prior experience required, and yet you are left wondering whether you should pack up your current career and move to Ibiza to become the next Sven Vath. Its a LOT of fun. Have a look: www.rockstargames.com.

Rockstar on the iPhone, huh? If this pushes through, then we just might see more of them on the App Store in the near future.

In the meantime, here's a featurette video for Beaterator's PSP Go version, with Timbaland talking about his project. It's lookin' veeeerrrry phat, and he's lookin' a veeeeeeeeeerrrry cool dad:

Alek from PSP Wiki: Dark AleX not leaving, DA forums shut down due to costs

August 30, 2009

Dark-Alex.org - Image 1

A couple of days ago, the PSP homebrew community was in shock as we found news about the Dark-AleX.org forum closing down. What could be the meaning of this? Does this mean there's no more homebrew slices of heaven from Dark AleX himself? Not exactly.

The good news is that Alek has clarified the current situation they are in. Posting at the PSP Wiki News, we finally see the light, and thankfully, it's not totally goodbye after all.

Said the post:

This really isn't "Wiki News" but seeing as there is a traffic increase with the wiki, I figured it will fit here: The forums are closed down due to expenses. Dark-Alex isn't leaving the scene or forgetting about us. So please don't have the "mental image" that he's ditched us for good. The forums are only down, the rest of the network isn't. If you have any issues, feel free to contact the staff throughout the network.

Thanks to hender and dargx001 for the tip!
